Atleast once a day I'm going to post a new fact, explain it, and give you a link to a more in depth explanation.
The first basic concept of the internet (broken down it means seperate computer networks communicating with each other), was perceived by the US military.
The military used pings (think of a ping as asking “hello, are you there?”) to determine whether a military base had been bombed. Each military base pinged another military base regularly, if a military base didnt respond to the ping it would have been assumed that the nuclear base had been bombed.
The networks were connected underground, the military couldn’t use radio waves (a well established technology at the time) to ping each other because nuclear fallout would temporarily render radio communication out of order.
